Puri: Police seized brown sugar worth around Rs 55 lakh from an SUV and arrested four persons in this connection in Odisha’s Puri town on Monday.
Acting on reliable information that some inter-district drug peddlers in an SUV, parked in front of Gadadhar High School at Lokannath Road under Town police station, were engaged in a deal for selling the brown sugar, a special team of Puri Police headed by sub-inspector Shrikant Sahoo conducted raid on the spot, police sources said.
During the raid, the police team found 538.5 gram of brown sugar worth around Rs 55 lakh and seized it. They also seized a country made pistol with 4 live ammunitions, 6 smartphones, 3 Keypad phones, Rs 7,32,000 in cash, two motorcycles.
Four persons engage in the deal were arrested while one managed to escape from the spot. The arrested persons were identified as Chintu alias Sumanta Sundara of Kanas area in Puri district, SK Subed of Jaleswar in Balasore, Imtu alias SK Imtiaz of Jatani in Khurda and Bapu alias Satyajit Das of Khurdha town.
Preliminary investigation revealed that some of the accused persons have NDPS cases pending against them in different districts. They used to procure the brown sugar from West Bengal and sell it in Khurda and Puri.
