Puri: Police have seized brown sugar worth about Rs 1 crore and arrested four persons in this connection in Odisha’s Puri town on Monday.
On the basis of reliable information about smuggling of the brown sugar at Sewerage Board treatment plant near Mangalaghat square in the morning, a team from Baseli Sahi police station went to the spot. During the raid on the place, the police caught the four persons in possession of the contraband and arrested them.
Mihir Panda, additional SP, Puri said the seized brown sugar weighed around 890 gram and its market value is estimated to be Rs 90 lakh. The police team has also seized a car, a motorcycle 9 costly mobile phones and Rs 11,500 in cash from their possession.
He further said the arrested persons are suppliers of the brown sugar to Puri town. Two of them are inter-state smugglers and two others are inter-district suppliers. The inter-state smugglers have been identified as Hasan Ali and Azizur Rehman belonging to West Bengal. The two others are Azad Ali of Khurda and Biplab Mallik of Jagatsinghpur.
The police arrested the four persons as part of the special task force’s drive against sale of narcotics and smugglers. Further investigation is going on to ascertain involvement of others in the racket, Panda said.
