Buying Liquor Online May Prove Costly: Know How Doctor Was Duped Of Rs 1.5 Lakh In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Despite awareness and alerts, educated people continue to be duped by online transactions as was experienced by a doctor in the city recently.

The doctor, who stays in the campus of a reputed private hospital, was searching for a site to order liquor online in Google when he came across a shop that claimed to deliver liquor at homes. He contacted the shop on the phone number given on the site and paid Rs 1480 via Google pay.

As the transaction could not be processed after several attempts, he called on the number. The respondent told him to first register himself by scanning a QR code provided to him. As soon as the doctor scanned the code through his Google pay account, Rs 10,000 was debited from his bank account immediately.

When he enquired in this regard, the service provider said it was done by mistake and the deducted amount would be refunded soon. They then asked him to use another bank account as his previous account might have some technical errors.

Unaware that he was being cheated, the doctor scanned another QR code provided by the service provider and this time, Rs 50,000 was deducted from his account. After a while, Rs 88,520 more was deducted.

The doctor realised that he was duped and filed a complaint at Khandagiri police station. A case of cyber crime has been registered and investigation is on.
