New Delhi: Minutes after the Centre implemented the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Congress leader Jairam Ramesh dubbed it as the BJP’s latest move to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam.
Taking to social media platform X, Ramesh said, “The Prime Minister claims that his Government works in a business-like and time-bound manner. The time taken to notify the rules for the CAA is yet another demonstration of the Prime Minister’s blatant lies.”
“After seeking nine extensions for the notification of the rules, the timing right before the elections is designed to polarise the elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam,” he added.
Another vocal critic of the Act, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed it as BJP’s election gimmick. “The Bill was passed in 2019 and the notification went on being extended. What could be the reason behind bringing it now,” she said while addressing a hurriedly called press conference at the state Secretariat in Kolkata.
“I do not know what’s there in the Act. Once it is in my hand, I will be able to tell the details. But, today, let me be very clear that we will oppose anything that discriminates people,” said Mamata.
