Hyderabad: Authorities at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad are reviewing safety protocols and transportation arrangements for airline staff, particularly those reporting for late night or early morning shifts, after a cabbie was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a cabin crew member of IndiGo, while driving her to work.
The 23-year-old driver, identified as Errapogu Prashanth, is a resident of Shamshabad mandal in Telangana’s Rangareddy district. He was driving the IndiGo employee to the airport for her night shift when he allegedly committed the crime, as reported by News18.
The incident took place when the woman was travelling to the airport in a cab assigned for her commute, the police said.
The driver allegedly diverted the vehicle from its usual route and stopped near an isolated under-construction area close to the airport during the journey.
The accused told the woman he needed to use the washroom before allegedly attempting to sexually assault her, the police said.
The woman claimed that she resisted the alleged assault and managed to flee from the spot. The police said the accused also escaped after she left.
The IndiGo staffer later approached the Airport Outpost Police in Shamshabad and lodged a complaint, narrating her ordeal. A case was registered by the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Police and an investigation was launched to trace the accused.
The police were able to track down Prashanth and arrest him. He was produced before a magistrate and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
Further investigation into the incident is underway, the police said.
