Bhubaneswar: A B.Tech student was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar, sending shockwaves in the capital city and triggering tension in the area.
The deceased has been identified as a first year Bachelor of Technology student in the engineering college located under Infocity police limits. The campus was tense following the incident that took place on Saturday night as hundreds of students gathered to protest the death.
According to sources, the student spoke to his parents at around 10 pm on Saturday. Just an hour later, the college authorities informed his family that their son has been hospitalised following a suicide attempt. â
I received a message that he has not marked his attendance. When he did not receive my call, my wife contacted his roommate. My son then called us back, said that he had fallen asleep and will eat dinner. How can he attempt to kill himself, just an hour later,â the studentâs father told a local news channel.
Alleging negligence by college authorities, his family claimed there was foul play, and demanded a thorough probe into the death. College authorities informed the family he was admitted to a nearby private hospital after he was found unconscious inside his hostel room. The student reportedly passed away during treatment.
Hundreds of students gathered outside the campus as news of his death during treatment spread. Some protesters have alleged the student resorted to the extreme step after ragging by senior students.
Infocity police have filed a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation into the incident.
Officials of the college said that police have initiated an investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident.
