Birmingham: Jasprit Bumrah celebrated his Team India captaincy debut with a world record – not with the ball, but with willow in hand.
Going into bat at No. 10 in the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston on Saturday, Bumrah bludgeoned Stuart Broad for 29 runs in an over to rewrite the world record for maximum runs scored by a batter in a single over in Test cricket.
In the process, Bumrah erased the record of 28 runs in an over by legendary West Indian batsman Brian Lara and Australian George Bailey.
Bumrah smashed 4 fours, 2 sixes and took a single off the last ball in his knock of unbeaten 31 as India scored 416 in the first innings.
Watch the highlights package of that over, posted on Twitter:
Bumrah’s thunderous blows apart, veteran pacer Broad also conceded 6 extra runs – 5 wides and a no-ball — in the 84th over to end up conceding 35. It was the most expensive over bowled in the history of Test cricket.
This was not the first time Broad had suffered at the hands of India. Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes off the Englishman’s over in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. That is another ignominious world record against Broad’s name.
