Car Sales Sank By More Than 84 Per Cent In May

New Delhi: After a near-zero sales figure in April, the automobile industry is slowing reopening most of its dealerships. The total cars sold in May was 36,697 units, a stark fall compared to a year before of 2,39,137 units.

Honda saw the biggest fall of around 96 per cent with just 375 units sold. Hyundai dropped 84 per cent, while Toyota crashed by 86 per cent.

Maruti came on top with just 13,700 units moved. New entrants such MG and Kia posted just 710 and 1,661 units respectively. At the bottom of the list was Jeep with just 93 units.

While some like Maruti and Hyundai have been hit by COVID-19 positive cases among their staff, others are trying hard to restart production and move products off their shelves.

There will be a gradual increase, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki, R C Bhargava told Business Standard, adding that sales “will not jump to the old levels anytime soon”.
