Carcass Found In Debrigarh Belongs To A Leopard: PCCF

Bhubaneswar: A day headless carcass of a carnivorous animal was recovered from Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Bargarh district, the Forest department on Monday confirmed that that it was of a leopard not the Royal Bengal tiger.

Talking to the media here on Monday after returning from Debrigarh sanctuary, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Sandip Tripathy said that the postmortem revealed that the carcass was of a leopard of around 2 to 3 weeks old.

He said the Forest department has begun an investigation into the incident.

In a statement, Forest and Environment minister Bijayshree Routray said the forensic team confirmed that the carcass of a leopard was buried after its death.

He further said that the carcass had been sent to the forensic laboratory in Dehradun to ascertain the cause of the death of the leopard.

It was initially suspected that the carcass was that of a Royal Bengal tiger.

The Forest department had recently found the presence of a Royal Bengal tiger in this sanctuary through trap cameras installed at various locations in the core forest area.
