Bhubaneswar: Police seized Rs 16.72 lakh in cash and nine cell phones from the office of Sambalpur circle jail’s jailer Sushant Rout during a surprise check, which was part of the simultaneous raids conducted on 12 jails across the state on Sunday.
A television set, cigarettes and gutkha were recovered from the medical cell of Chowdwar jail, where businessman Mahimananda Mishra, an accused in Seaways Shipping general manager murder case, was lodged.
“The raids were conducted in Bhubaneswar (Jharpada), Cuttack, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Balasore and Berhampur following complaints regarding several anomalies”, a senior police officer said.
