Bhubaneswar: A government engineer was killed in an accident involving multiple vehicles on NH-16 near Palasuni in Bhubaneswar around 9.10 am on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Sumanta Das (36) of Aiginia in Bhubaneswar. He was posted at Barachana in Jajpur district as a sub-divisional officer (electrical) and was on his way to the office when the unfortunate incident took place.
According to sources, a truck stopped as some people were crossing the road. Three cars and a truck slowed down but Hyva truck sped on, hitting the white car, behind the blue one belonging to Das, and stumbling it across the divider to the opposite side and then crashing into his car. Das’ car was crushed between the spending vehicle and the stationary truck ahead. He died on the spot.
The stationary truck was pushed with such force that it hit a car in front. The persons inside the car, however, escaped unhurt though the vehicle was damaged.
The driver of the ‘killer’ truck fled the spot soon after the accident.
The entire incident was caught on a CCTV camera installed in a nearby establishment. Soon, Odisha Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and they had to use cutters to recover the body from the mangled remains of the car. Mancheswar police later admitted the drivers of other vehicles to Capital Hospital, Unit-6.
Following the accident, traffic came to a standstill on the National Highway for more than an hour. Normalcy was restored after police and rescue personnel removed the vehicles from the road.
