Bhubaneswar: Gangster SK Hyder was brought to the Bhubaneswar airport on Friday a day after his arrest in Telangana.

Hyder was caught from Sangareddy district in a joint operation by Commissionerate Police and Hyderabad City Police.

On Thursday morning, Hyderabad Police recovered a car in which Hyder had escaped from Odisha. Police intercepted him while he was moving on a bike in Sangareddy district in the evening.

This was possible because of Hyderabad’s robust CCTV network of 5 lakh cameras and a strong analytics team, which zeroed in on the vehicle used by Hyder, sources said.

“Absconding Odisha criminal caught by Hyderabad Police. Hyderabad City Commissioner’s task force has caught the fugitive and absconding notorious criminal of Odisha SK Hyder, aged 60 years,” Hyderabad City police tweeted.

Twin City Commissioner of Police Soumendra Priyadarshi, who was supervising the operation, told the media that two teams of Cuttack urban police district had left for Hyderabad to nab Hyder.

He will be brought back to Odisha within 24 hours on a transit remand and a thorough probe will be conducted, he had said.

Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh monitored the entire operation.

According to sources, police got vital clues in the gangster’s escape plan after Yakub Khan, who used to bring biryani for him, surrendered to Chauliaganj police. Khan had revealed about one of Hyder’s relatives Istiaq and preliminary investigation suggested his involvement in the plan behind the gangster’s escape.

Meanwhile, his wife Hasina Bibi has refuted the allegations of the involvement of family members in his escape. “Neither my sons nor son-in-law has any role in his escape. They left the city in fear of getting arrested by the police,” she said.

The gangster had slipped out of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on April 10. He was apparently suffering from a kidney ailment and admitted to the Surgery ward’s cabin number – 5 on March 24.

Hyder has been convicted in two cases of murder and serving sentences. He was lodged in Circle Jail, Sambalpur. He was involved in the killing of bitter rival SK Suleiman’s brother SK Chuna in Bhubaneswar in May 2005 and the murder of mines trader Rashmi Ranjan Mahapatra in 2007.
