Kolkata: More than seven weeks after being entrusted with the task of investigating the rape and murder of a junior doctor, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its first chargesheet in the RK Kar case on Monday.

The central agency has formally charged main accused Sanjay Roy, who worked as a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, with rape and murder of the trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital on August 9, under BNS section 64/66/103 (1).

There is no mention of gangrape, though multiple injury marks found on the woman’s body led many to believe that several persons were involved in the crime.

Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10. On August 13, Calcutta High Court directed CBI to take over the probe from Kolkata Police.

The 45-page chargesheet was submitted to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court in Sealdah.

“Sanjay Roy has been charged with rape and murder. There is no mention of a gangrape (in the chargesheet). Sanjay Roy is the only accused who committed the crime. However, the probe is still going on. The chargesheet mentions that he was in an inebriated condition when the crime was committed,” The Indian Express quoted a CBI source as saying.

The body of the junior female doctor was found in a semi-naked state in the seminar room of R G Kar Hospital’s emergency building, where she had gone to rest during her night shift.

The chargesheet has stated that CCTV footage showed Roy entering the seminar room around 4 am on August 9 and leaving after around 30 minutes. The chargesheet also mentioned there were 16 external and nine internal injuries on the doctor’s body.

Roy, a civic volunteer assigned to the police outpost of RG Kar hospital, tried to mislead investigators during questioning. However, blood and tissue found from the victim’s nails matched with Roy’s DNA.

Roy, who is lodged in Presidency central jail, was interrogated by CBI in custody and also underwent a polygraph test.
