New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) On Tuesday said that it has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) following orders of the Bombay High Court inside 15 days into accusations of corruption and misconduct against ex-Home Minister of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh.
“The agency has registered a PE with respect to the Bombay High Court order dated April 5,” a CBI official was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
It may be recalled that the Bombay High Court on Monday had directed the central agency to conduct a preliminary probe within 15 days against Deshmukh. Deshmukh stepped down from his ministerial portfolio after the alleged corruption charges levelled against him.
The former Mumbai top cop had sought a thorough CBI probe into his allegations that Deshmukh had asked arrested policeman Sachin Vaze ‘to collect’ Rs 100 crore a month and also challenged his own (Singh) transfer as Commandant-General, Home Guards.
Earlier on Tuesday, Deshmukh had raised the issue of legality in the appointment of an interim CBI Director in his plea challenging the Bombay High Court order directing a PE by the agency. Deshmukh also sought a stay on the high court order as an interim relief, reported the agency.
