Bhubaneswar: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), has initiated action against 130 teachers and coordinators across the country for errors in calculating marks awarded in Class XII exams re-evaluation.
Among the 130 accused of toying with the careers of students, seven are from Bhubaneswar.
“As many as 45 teachers from Patna region, the highest, have been held accountable for the gross carelessness resulting in severe hardships to the candidates,” said a senior board official.
Letters of immediate disciplinary action, including suspension, have been issued to the schools by CBSE’s Dehradun office.
There have been 14 cases of miscalculation in Chennai, 11 in Allahabad, two in Guwahati, eight each in Ajmer and Panchkula and one in Thiruvananthapuram.
However, CBSE said the percentage of miscalculations have come down. “According to statistics, the percentage of students applying for verification of marks in 2014, 2015 and 2016 were 2.31, 2.09 and 2.53 respectively and it has come down in the last two years,” the official added.
Chairman of Odisha’s CBSE Parents Association, Sudarshan Das said he had been raising the issue since long. “Last year, our voices were not heard but what happened this time reveals the faulty system. There is a need for drastic reform in both examination and result evaluation,” he added.
Parents and students of Class XII CBSE board had staged a dharna in front of the board office, demanding a just scorecard and result.
Hearing a petition, Orissa High Court had also directed the CBSE to conduct a revaluation of answer sheets of 159 students.
The results of Class XI and XII were declared in the last week of May. However, candidates who were unsatisfied with the marks they were awarded were able to apply for the re-evaluation process, which began on June 1.
