Bhubaneswar: An official of the Central government was allegedly beaten to death by irate crowd after his vehicle ran over a man, killing him on the spot, in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday.
According to sources, the incident took place while the official, identified as Satyanarayan Nanda, working as surveyor in the Piped Water Scheme of the Centre and another officer Phula Chandra Sharma from Uttar Pradesh were going in a Scorpio vehicle towards Bangiriposi.
While crossing the junction near Katar bridge at around noon, the vehicle collided with a Scooty driven by Harihar Sethi of Gosanipal village coming from opposite direction. As Harihar died on the spot, the local villagers gheraoed the Scorpio.
The irate villagers dragged Satyanarayan and Sharma out of the vehicle and beat them up severely. They also staged a road blockade on Bangriposi-Jharpokharia State Highway-49 demanding compensation for the family of Harihar.
On being informed, police rushed to the spot and rescued the two officials. The police also admitted the two officials in critical condition in Baripada hospital.
Later, both of them were shifted to Pandit Raghunath Murmu College and Hospital at Baripada where Satyanarayan succumbed during treatment. Sharma’s condition was stated to be critical.
