New Delhi: The Centre is of the view that the threat perception to former prime minister Manmohan Singh has considerably reduced six years after he demitted office.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has accordingly decided to withdraw the security cover provided by the Special Protection Group (SPG).
In a statement, the Ministry said the decision to downgrade Singh’s protection was taken following a review by multiple security agencies.
The former PM’s security will now be taken over by CRPF as he will still continue to enjoy Z plus category security.
The SPG security cover is being provided to the PM and to the Gandhi family — Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka.
The Z plus category has a security cover of 55 personnel, which includes NSG and CRPF commandos.
