Puri: In order to give a boost to India Post, the Central government plans to open 500-600 post offices in Odisha, said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Speaking to media persons after inaugurating the sub-post office at Durgadaspur in Pipili area of Puri district on Saturday, Dharmendra said as part of the Centre’s move to strengthen the departments that have turned almost defunct, the operations of Indian Post have been diversified to cater to various needs of the people.
“Apart from serving as courier offices, the post offices now function as banks to help mobilisation of investment. Keeping this in view, computerisation of the post offices across the country is going on. Besides, the Centre has planned to open the post offices in remote corners of the country,” he added.
Thanking Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw for the initiative in opening the sub-post office at Durgadaspur, Dharmendra said with this the number of post offices in the country has gone up to 7,696. It would cater to the needs of more than 5,000 people of 7 villages, he added.
Dharmendra was accompanied by BJP leader Sambit Patra during his visit to Puri.
