Centurions Who Have Seen Every General Elections In Independent India

They have seen almost all elections since India became a Republic in 1950 and they are ready to cast their ballots once again in the 2019 polls for a better future of the younger generation.

Let’s take a look at some of the centurion voters, the veterans among the electorates:

1. Shyam Saran Negi:

The 103-years-old also happens to be the first voter of Independent India, and a celebrated one at that. Negi exercised his voting rights in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh in 1951 and became the first Indian to do so, according to the Election Commission record. He has featured in several documentaries as well.

Polling in Himachal will be held on May 7 and 19 and Negi is all pumped up to vote in the Lok Sabha elections.

Ram Prasad Sharma:

Ram Prasad Sharma has been continuously voting in the Lok Sabha elections since it was first held in 1951-52. He is the oldest person in the Semra village in Khandauli town in Agra district of Uttar Pradesh.

“I have not been keeping well, but I will definitely go to vote this time also. I also request everyone to vote as it is the most important thing we can do for our country,” Ram Prasad told reporters recently.

Sumitra Rai:

Sumitra is aged 107 years and is the oldest voter registered to vote this election in the State of Sikkim. The Mamley Kamrang GPU resident would cast her vote in Kamrang secondary school polling station under Poklok Kamrang constituency in the district.

Lakhi Paul:

A 104-year-old woman, Lakhi Paul, cast her vote in Assam on Thursday where elections are being held under the first phase. She’s the oldest voter in the state.

Besides, there are some constituencies who have achieved a unique distinction of having the highest number of centurion voters in this general elections.

In Asansol sub-division of West Bengal, there are 19 voters in the list who will exercise their franchise in this election.

In Karnataka, there are 5579 voters who are more than 100 years old. A good number of them are residents of Mysuru.
