Chandigarh: A devastating family dispute in Chandigarh has culminated in tragedy, with a Chandigarh Police head constable allegedly shot dead in his own home by his 18-year-old son. According to law enforcement authorities, the confrontation erupted over the teenager’s urgent demands to marry his girlfriend.
Nitin Singh, a head constable assigned to the accounts branch at the police headquarters, was discovered dead on Friday inside his official government residence in Sector 22, bearing a fatal gunshot wound to the head. A countrymade firearm was recovered from the scene by investigators.
Police reports indicate that the fatal shooting was preceded by a fierce argument between the father and his son, Armaan, on Thursday evening. Authorities revealed that Armaan was pressuring his parents to permit an immediate marriage and demanded that the young woman be brought to their household. His parents, however, refused the demand and insisted that he wait until he reaches 21 years of age, the legally mandated minimum age for men to marry in India. Armaan had also been demanding money from his parents to support his personal expenses.
According to a senior police official, Sudesh Kumar, who spoke to NDTV, the suspect “showed no remorse” for his actions.
During the horrific incident, Armaan reportedly turned his aggression toward his mother, physically grabbing her by the neck. She managed to break free, fled to the rooftop, and raised the alarm with neighbours. A local resident noted that following the attack, the teenager attempted to mislead investigators by fabricating a story that an intruder had broken into the residence and shot his father.
Investigators further disclosed that Armaan was already out on bail at the time of the incident, having been arrested earlier this year following a fatal road accident in Manimajra. In that prior case, he was allegedly driving a friend’s Mahindra Thar when the vehicle collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two brothers.
Armaan has since been taken into custody by the police as the investigation continues.
