Beijing: For the first time since January 2021, China on Saturday reported deaths caused by COVID-19.
Amid a spike in coronavirus cases driven by the Omicron variant, there were two deaths in the north-eastern province of Jilin, which is the epicentre of the current outbreak.
The deaths took China’s overall COVID toll to 4,638. Of those, China reported just two COVID-related deaths in 2021, the last being on January 25.
The two deaths apart, China reported 3,870 fresh COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Since March 1, the country has seen more than 22,000 cases of coronavirus infections – a huge rise compared to the past 12 months.
