New Delhi: According to US-based Pew Research Center’s survey, majority of people in 14 countries — including the Netherlands, the US, UK, Australia and Germany — have a negative opinion about China.
The survey was conducted between June 10 and August 3, in which 14,276 adults participated via phone.
The report revealed that this unfavourable opinion has grown this year, with many believing that China has handled the COVID-19 pandemic poorly.
Australians ‘led’ in the conception against China, with 81 per cent viewing the Communist country unfavourably.
As far as the pandemic is concerned, 84 per cent felt that China handled it poorly. Around 74 per cent of those polled said they had “not too much or no confidence in Xi Jinping to do the right thing regarding world affairs”.
About 78 per cent of Germans said that they had no confidence in Xi, whereas 89 per cent said they felt the same about Trump.
“A median of 78 per cent say they have not too much or no confidence in him (Xi) to do the right thing regarding world affairs, including at least seven-in-ten in every country surveyed. This lack of confidence in Xi is at a historic high in every country for which trend data is available except Japan and Spain,” the study observed.
However, US President Donald Trump has lower public confidence than the Chinese President, the survey found.
Sweden, South Korea, Italy, Spain and Canada also participated in the survey.
