Chinese President Xi Jinping
Beijing: China, under pressure from the USA and several other countries for their role in the novel coronavirus pandemic which started in Wuhan, tried to soothe sentiments on Monday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said that their coronavirus vaccine will be made a global public good once one is available.
“Covid-19 vaccine development and deployment in China, when available, will be made a global public good, which will be China’s contribution to ensuring vaccine accessibility and affordability in developing countries,” Xi said while addressing the governing body of World Health Organization (WHO).
Dozens of vaccine projects are in the works across the world. China has five of them, in the human trials stage.
China has faced constant criticism over its handling of Covid-19, none more so than from the Donald Trump administration.
Xi again defended his country’s role, saying that China acted with transparency and responsibility right through, and provided information to the WHO and other countries in proper time.
He also said China will provide a fund of $2 billion over a period of two years to support the fight against the pandemic, especially in developing countries.
