New Delhi: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), India’s prestigious competitive exams, have been in focus since the death of three candidates in the capital a week ago.

Now, it has emerged that a girl student from Maharashtra preparing for civil services exam in Delhi’s Old Rajendra Nagar died by suicide after failing to cope with the immense pressures of the highly-competitive tests.

The girl took her life just days before three UPSC aspirants died in the flooded basement of their coaching centre in the national Capital.

In her suicide note, the Maharashtra girl revealed the intense mental and emotional strain she had been experiencing. Detailing the extreme pressure of UPSC preparation, she criticised exploitative practices of private hostels and PG accommodations.

The note also conveyed her despair and disappointment for failing to clear the UPSC despite repeated attempts.

“I am sorry mummy papa… I am really very fed up. There are just problems & issues only, no peace… I tried every possible way to get rid from this so-called depression, but I can’t overcome it,” she wrote.

Her friend Shweta told NDTV that she could not clear the exam in three attempts.

“She gave 3 attempts, and gave it her all every time, but could not clear the exam. The pressure was growing on her. Even the financial pressure was building as the rent in the area was increasing every few months,” Shweta said.

The girl’s pleaded for understanding and a criticism of the systemic issues plaguing UPSC aspirants.

Delhi Police are investigating the case.

“We are looking into the details of the matter and examining the conditions that led to this tragic incident,” a spokesperson said.
