New Delhi: Kiran Rao’s highly-appreciated movie ‘Laapataa Ladies’ was screened for all Supreme Court judges, their spouses and members of the registry on Friday.
The screening was organised by the Supreme Court’s Communication Division on Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud’s initiative.
The screening, which took place at the auditorium of the top court’s administrative building complex, was attended by the film’s director Kiran Rao and producer Aamir Khan.
Kiran took to Instagram to share a number of pictures from the screening, where she is seen addressing the audience with former husband Aamir seated beside her. Kiran and Aamir also posed for a picture with CJI Chandrachud and his wife Kalpana Das.
“We had the unbelievable honour of screening our film Laapataa Ladies at the Supreme Court yesterday. As is visible in these pictures, I am over the moon! Deeply grateful to our absolutely brilliant CJI DY Chandrachud, his wonderful partner Ms Kalpana Das, and the whole team of the CJI. It is an experience I will personally always hold dear, and on behalf of my entire cast and crew, I am so thankful for this honour,” Kiran wrote alongside the photos.
‘Laapataa Ladies’, Kiran’s second directorial venture after 2011 film ‘Dhobi Ghat’, revolves around gender equality.
The film resonated with the CJI as part of his year-round emphasis on gender sensitisation programme at the Supreme Court.
The idea came from his lawyer wife Kalpana, after she and her staff had watched the film.
“It is my initiative to sensitise the Supreme Court staff and that is why this screening. There are many such things happening in the Supreme Court which is often not publicised. Like now we also have a round the clock Ayurvedic clinic for treatment and relaxation of Supreme Court staff members. So this screening is also for members to bond over,” CJI told Bar & Bench.
‘Laapataa Ladies’, which stars newcomers Pratibha Ratna, Sparsh Shrivastav and Nitanshi Goel, has been produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and Jyoti Deshpande under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Pictures and Jio Studios.
The film opened to rave reviews when it was released in theatres on March 1, and is currently streaming on Netflix.
‘Laapataa Ladies’ was screened at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival last September.
