New Delhi: In a first, the Supreme Court (SC) is live-streaming proceedings before the bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana on Friday.

A notice issued by the SC on August 26 informed about the live-streaming being done through the web portal of the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

“Please take notice that on the eve of laying down of the office of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, the proceedings of the Hon’ble Chief Justice’ Court i.e., Ceremonial Bench on August 26, 2022, 10:30 A.M. onwards shall be livestreamed through the NIC’ webcast portal,” stated the notice.

Friday is the last working day of outgoing CJI Ramana. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will be the new and 49th CJI. He has a short tenure and will remain in office till November 8, 2022.

It is pertinent to mention that six High Courts in India currently have their channels on YouTube and livestream their proceedings on the platform. The states are Odisha, Gujarat, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Karnataka.

CJI Ramana on August 4 recommended the name of Justice Lalit as his successor.

Currently, the second seniormost judge of the SC, Justice Lalit enrolled as an advocate in June 1983. He practised in the Bombay High Court till December 1985 and then shifted to Delhi in January 1986.

He was designated as senior advocate by the SC in April 2004 and appeared as amicus curiae in many cases. He was appointed Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI in 2G trial. Justice Lalit was also a member of the Supreme Court of India Legal Services Committee for two terms.

He was appointed judge of the SC on August 13, 2014, being directly elevated from the Bar.
