Bhubaneswar: Odisha witnessed a sharp rise in suicide cases in the past six years, according to official data.
The state recorded 28,249 suicides during 2016-21, the number of cases increasing every year. While 3,884 suicides were reported in 2016, cases rose to 4,151 in 2017, 4,447 in 2018 and 4,636 in 2019.
During the pandemic years 2020-21, cases crossed the 5,000-mark — 5,482 cases in 2020 and 5,649 cases in 2021.
Bhubaneswar recorded 1,557 suicides in this six-year period. The city registered 282 suicides in 2021 and 310 in 2020.
Maximum cases were reported from Cuttack with 3,325 suicides in the six-year period.
Sambalpur recorded 2,802 suicides, while Berhampur police district area reported 1,697 cases.
Mayurbhanj reported 1,640 cases, while Boudh reported the lowest number of cases with 96.
