Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday called upon the officers of the Odisha Information Service (OIS) to evolve beyond traditional roles and harness the power of social media and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bridge the gap between the administration and the public.
Delivering the keynote address on ‘Emerging Trends in Social Media’ at an orientation programme for the OIS officers in Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister laid out a dynamic roadmap for modern public communication in the state and assigned a social media task to the officers.
Stressing that information officers must step out of traditional boundaries, Majhi said their responsibilities extend far beyond merely issuing routine press releases. “Public relations today demands active engagement. Information officers must act as a strong, living bridge between the government and the people,” he said.
The Chief Minister advised officers to take a lead on social media platforms, using them not just as dissemination channels, but as tools to listen to citizen feedback and understand public sentiment.
Highlighting the rapid evolution of technology, Majhi encouraged the OIS officers to embrace emerging tools like AI and ChatGPT to streamline communication and broaden their reach. However, he cautioned that these technologies must be used responsibly and constructively for public good.
He stressed that high-quality, positive content should remain the cornerstone of government outreach, urging officers to focus on spreading constructive stories that inspire trust and participation.
Majhi further stressed that that information about key government welfare programs should effectively reach people at the grassroots level. He referred to flagship initiatives like the Subhadra Yojana for women empowerment.
Social media serves as a powerful instrument to empower these schemes by making information transparent, accessible, and engaging for beneficiaries across the state, he said.
