Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay has directed Chennai Police to intensify the probe into the Veeramani POCSO case. According to the reports, he ordered a foolproof probe, strict action against those involved. He has also ordered protection for survivors. So far, eight survivors have recorded their testimonies, reported NDTV.
The Tamil Nadu Police had arrested 84-year-old prominent industrialist R Veeramani and two accomplices in August following the emergence of crucial digital evidence in a sexual assault case. While a POCSO court in February denied a police request to close the case due to initial lack of evidence, subsequent investigations exposed a wider pattern of abuse dating back years.
Initial Investigation and Closed Closure Report
The case was originally lodged on October 6, 2025, by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) following a complaint from a volunteer working at a trust run by Veeramani. The volunteer submitted a pen drive containing surveillance footage—bearing a 2019 watermark—of an older man assaulting a minor girl.
However, arrests were initially delayed. Police cited that the blurry video made it difficult to confirm the suspect’s identity, and officers could not immediately ascertain the age or identity of the victim.
Consequently, authorities sought to close the case citing a lack of evidence. A POCSO court declined this request in February, keeping the investigation open for potential new leads.
Breakthrough and Arrests in August
Between February and August, further investigation uncovered significant material. Police recovered additional footage of alleged assaults from a rented property in Teynampet, noting that attempts had been made to destroy evidence. Forensic analysis of the seized items strengthened the prosecution’s case.
Investigators also retrieved historical digital records, including an SMS from an accomplice named Shanthi referencing an incident from 2003, suggesting the abuse may have spanned decades. Police noted that one historical victim may have died by suicide.
Modus Operandi
According to police, Veeramani exploited young girls from underprivileged backgrounds who were seeking financial assistance. Shanthi allegedly lured girls aged between 12 and 16 years to properties in and around Chennai owned by the accused, using small incentives such as chocolates, mobile phones, and cash assistance.
Authorities have identified additional victims and recorded their statements as the judicial proceedings against Veeramani and his accomplices continue.
