Kolkata: A three-member CBI team turned up at Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s house in south Kolkata on Sunday afternoon to question his wife Rujira Narula in the alleged coal smuggling case.
It was learnt that a telephonic conversation took place between Rujira and CBI officials, who asked her to join the probe.
On Friday, CBI carried out searches at 13 locations across several districts in West Bengal in connection with the case, which has been under investigation since November.
Two days later, CBI came calling at the doors of state chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek, himself an influential Trinamool leader.
Political analysts say that the timing of Sunday’s visit to Abhishek’s residence was significant.
Two days ago, a special court in West Bengal issued summons to Union Home minister Amit Shah to appear personally or through a lawyer before it on February 22. It’s in relation to a defamation case filed by Abhishek against Shah pertaining to certain remarks made by the Home minister at a rally in Kolkata on August 11, 2018.
