Bhubaneswar: Though the day temperature in Odisha will rise above 30 degree Celsius, the cold condition during the night is likely to continue till February 7, said a release by the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), SOA (Deemed to be University), on Monday.
According to the release, the fluctuation in the day and night temperature is due to the clear sky. However, a western disturbance in eastern India is likely to cause light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm accompanied by hail between February 8 and 10 over north Odisha districts. Due to cloudy weather, there will be an increase in the night temperature from February 7. But a fall in the night temperature is most likely from February 11.
The release further said that a strong westerly wind of about 200 km at a height of 12 km above mean sea level, known as Jet Stream, was blowing over north Odisha. It was created due to the difference in cold air mass in north and warmth in the south.
Due to strong polar vortex of a large area of low pressure over North Pole (Arctic region) with cold air blowing anti-clockwise around polar vortex extending south of vortex region, severe cold wave condition was prevailing in the extra-tropical region of North America and European countries, the release added.
Meanwhile, in an evening release, the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said that the night temperature recorded on Monday was lowest in Phulbani at 9.4 degree Celsius while the night temperature in most parts of south and western Odisha districts remained under 12 degree Celsius.
The twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar recorded 13 and 13.3 degree Celsius respectively.
