Cold Wave Returns To Odisha, Dense Fog Warning Continues For 2 Days

Bhubaneswar: After a brief respite, winter chill is likely to return to Odisha with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of cold wave conditions in isolated pockets in the districts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh and Angul on December 5-6.

Dense fog may also occur at one or two places in Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput and Sonepur during this period. However, the night temperature in the state is unlikely to witness any significant change during the next seven days.

In the last 24 hours,

the mercury levels dropped below 10°C at four places in the state with Daringbadi being the coldest at 8.5°C, followed by Angul at 9°C and Jharsuguda and Rourkela at 9.6°C each. Angul recorded the highest drop of 5.7°C from normal, while Jharsuguda was close second at 3.9°C.

The other places where night temperature hovered around 10-12°C include Phulbani and G Udayagiri, also in Kandhamal, at 10°C and 10.4°C respectively, Semiliguda in Koraput at 10.6°C, Koraput at 11.4°C, Sundargarh at 11.6°C and Bhawanipatna at 11.8°C.

Dense fog also engulfed Rourkela, Koraput and Phulbani this morning, reducing visibility below 50 metres. Shallow fog was reported in Bhawanipatna, Sonepur and Gopalpur.

The mercury also dropped below 15°C in Bhubaneswar (14°C) and Cuttack (13.2°C). The night temperature is likely to hover around 13-12°C in the twin cities during the next seven days, it added.
