Bhubaneswar: Cyber Police has arrested a college student for cheating a man of Rs 75,000 by promising him to sell a high-end cellphone in Bhubaneswar.
Commissionerate of Police, in a release on Thursday, stated that the accused, identified as Asish Kumar Jena, belonging to Kenheipur under Jajpur Road police station in Jajpur district, had called the victim over phone and wanted to sell his second-hand monile phone at a cheap rate.
The victim had gone to Infocity in the city and checked the phone of Asish. Later, he paid Rs 75,000 to Asish in the latter’s UPI account as told by Asish. But the victim did not get the phone and could not contact Asish despite repeated attempts for several days.
Realising that he had turned a victim of cyber fraud, he filed a complaint with the Cyber Police on March 30. During their investigation, the police came to know that Asish was still using the phone number from which he had called the victim.
After tracing Asish, a team from Cyber police station arrested Asish. During questioning, they could know that Asish was a college student and two cases in cyber police station and one in Nayapalli police station were pending against him. The police forwarded Asish to court on Thursday.
