Alipurduar (West Bengal): A college student allegedly took her own life here after a video of her stealing chocolates at a shopping mall went viral on social media.
West Bengal police said on Monday that the body of a third-year undergraduate student was found hanging at her house in Subhas Pally area, under Jaigaon police station of Alipurduar district, on Sunday.
Officer-in-charge of Jaigaon PS Prabir Dutta informed that the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
The female student’s father said that she had gone to a shopping mall with her sister, when she was caught with chocolates while leaving the mall.
Questioned by mall authorities, the girl apologized to them and paid for the chocolates.
Some people at the store, however, recorded the incident and posted it on social media. As it went viral, the embarrassed and humiliated girl took the extreme step, her father said.
After the incident came to light, local people staged a protest outside the shopping mall, demanding strong action against those who made the video and posted it online.
There was no immediate response from the mall authorities.
Police are investigating the case.
