Bhubaneswar: Doctors at SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) recently performed a critical surgery to save the life of a newborn baby with complex congenital anomaly.
When the premature male baby, born in another private hospital, was rushed to SUMUM, he was in a critical condition. He weighed just 2kg and was unable to feed while frothing in the mouth.
After a thorough evaluation, doctors diagnosed it to be a case of Esophageal Atresia combined with Tracheo Esophageal Fistula.
It was a complex case, wherein upper esophagus was found to be blind and the lower part was connected to the wind pipe, informed Pediatric surgery consultant Dr Antaryami Pradhan.
A team comprising Dr Pradhan, Senior Consultant Dr Pradeep Kumar Dey and Associate Consultant in Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology Dr Bichitrananda Raut decided to conduct the surgery immediately to correct the anomaly.
Backed by the anesthesia team headed by Dr Dipankar Padhiary, Dr Pradhan separated the abnormal connection from the wind pipe following which esophageal anastomosis was done.
The baby recovered responded well to the challenging surgery undertaken amidst the pandemic situation and recovered. He was discharged from the hospital without any complications.
