Hyderabad: Politicians in India can go to any level in a bid to go one-up on their rivals.
In the latest slanging match, Asaduddin Owaisi took on RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s comment on population control by lecturing him about the use of condoms.
The AIMIM chief said that the population of Muslims is not increasing in India, and it’s Muslims who are using condoms the most.
“The population of Muslims is not increasing, instead it is declining. The spacing between children is also increasing among Muslims. Who is using condoms the most? We are. Mohan Bhagwat won’t speak about this,” Owaisi said in a video that he tweeted.
The Hyderabad MP’s retort came after Bhagwat said at RSS’ annual Dussehra rally that India needs a policy for population control which is “equally applicable to all.”
“Along with population control, balance on religious basis is also a matter of importance which cannot be ignored,” said Bhagwat.
He also mentioned “forced conversions” while speaking on the subject.
Countering Bhagwat’s claim, Owaisi referred to the National Family Health Survey – 5 and said that the highest drop in Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has been among Muslims.
“I want to ask Mohan Bhagwat about lakhs of daughters of our Hindu sisters are missing from 2000 to 2019. This is the government’s figure. But he won’t talk about it,” he quipped.
BJP’s Shahnawaz Hussain described Owaisi as a ‘bayan purush’.
“Asaduddin Owaisi has become ‘Bayan Purush’, he wants to create a controversy. A low population is beneficial for society… The more the population grows, bigger the problem it creates. That should be kept in mind,” he remarked.
