Bhubaneswar: Activists of the students’ wing of the Congress entered into a scuffle with police while staging a demonstration in Bhubaneswar demanding steps to hold college union elections in the state this year.
The demonstrators lashed out at the BJP government in Odisha over its announcement that the students’ union elections in the state will be held next year.
The protesters came face to face with police while trying to break the barricade in an attempt to march towards the state Assembly building. Several of them scuffled with the police personnel who tried to prevent them from proceeding.
Several activists were taken into preventive custody while they tried to march towards the Assembly building shouting slogans in favour of holding students’ union elections this year.
The demonstrators attacked the state government for claiming that there is little time to hold the elections this year.
The Congress activists asserted that they will continue with the agitation in support of holding students’ union elections in the state.
Stating that BJP was also opposing when students’ union elections were not being held during BJD rule, they said the saffron party has changed its colour after coming to power in the state.
