Vinod Thakor, Congress leader from Patan district in Gujarat, has been arrested for allegedly circulating an old video of Odisha claiming eviction of poor vendors in Ahmedabad ahead of US President Donald Trump’s visit.
Thakor is reportedly chairman of the Patan district Congress’ social media cell.
Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested him on Thursday under IPC Sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).
Thakor had shared a video and claimed the “BJP government is ruining the lives of poor people because US President Trump is coming to Ahmedabad”.
In the video, a JCB machine is seen destroying handcarts, some with vegetables. However, this video is an old one, shot in Odisha. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, too, clarified this.
Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to address a gathering at a new cricket stadium in Motera on February 24. The duo will take part in a 22km long road show as well.
