Bhubaneswar: Congress on Thursday approached Odisha Governor and sought a High Court-monitored probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the death of Gobinda Sahu, prime accused in Mamita Meher murder case.
A delegation of state Congress went to Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum to the Governor. Members of the team said there should be a High Court-monitored SIT probe into the highly sensitive case.
Moreover, registration of FIR lodged by the wife of the deceased and a thorough investigation on her complaint is essential to unearth the truth and ensure justice to the family of the victim, the Congress memorandum said.
Describing the death of Sahu as mysterious, it said the government’s claim that it is a case of suicide is totally unacceptable. “The question arises that when the prisoners are under the watchful of the jail warders and when every activity is under CCTV surveillance, how could Sahu come out and hang himself ?” it asked.
Stating that the death was caused under suspicious circumstances, the Congress memorandum said it is a case of gross negligence of jail administration for which the Chief Minister cannot run away from accountability as he happens to be the Home Minister.
“Hope you will appreciate our concern and prevail upon the state government to order a High Court-monitored SIT and come clean,” the memorandum to the Governor added.
The delegation included MLAs Santosh Singh Saluja and Adhiraj Panigrahi, former MLA Lalatendu Mohapatra, and senior leaders Ganeswar Behera and Sivananda Ray.
It may be noted here that Sahu was found hanging in Kantabanji jail in Balangir district on Tuesday ahead of his scheduled appearance before a local court.
