Kolkata: In a sensational claim, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has claimed that some groups linked to Opposition parties have hatched a conspiracy to attack the striking doctors at their protest site just to defame the Mamata Banerjee government and ruling party of West Bengal.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh played an audio clip (unverified) in which two persons are purportedly engaged in a conversation discussing pros and cons of the alleged attack.
The duo is heard planning to “attack the junior doctors on their return from (state secretariat) Nabanna on September 12 night,” Ghosh claimed at a press conference on Friday.
The resident doctors of state government hospitals are protesting the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital last month.
They have been on ceasework since August 9 and continuously pressing for certain demands in their protests, having defied Supreme court’s directive and the CM’s repeated pleas to rejoin work.
The doctors have been sit-in outside Swasthya Bhavan entered the fourth day on Friday, as they demand removal of top officials of the state Health department.
They travelled from their protest site to the state secretariat on Thursday, but the meeting with the CM fell through for the third time, this time due to a disagreement over live telecast of proceedings.
“The audio clip makes it clear that some people wanted to attack the junior doctors last night and they may be at it again. We have asked the police and security forces to be on alert. If miscreants succeed in their plan, the entire blame will be put on state government,” the TMC leader said, claiming that his party has credible information that some Left and ultra-Left organisations are conspiring to infiltrate into the ranks of protestors and carry on attacks to defame TMC and the Mamata government.
Claiming that leaders and workers of parties like CPI(M) and BJP are visiting the sit-in site, he urged doctors to be alert and aware.
Suvendu Adhikari’s counter charge
BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition, retorted by saying that TMC was plotting a conspiracy against the doctors’ movement and vowed that they won’t allow anyone to touch junior doctors.
“If any untoward incident happens, people of Bengal will paralyse the state. Our party workers and supporters will also be among them,” Adhikari said.
