Phulbani: A police constable allegedly committed suicide in his official residence in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Monday. This is the second suicide case of police officials in the district in the last 7 months.
Speaking to the media on the incident, Kandhamal SP Subhendu Patra said the deceased constable Srinivas Ghotal posted in Tikabali police station. Ghotal had returned to her official residence on the police station premises after completing his duty at night.
Another official of the police station went to Ghotal’s house in the first floor of the building on some work at around 11 am on Monday. As the constable did not open the front door after repeated knocking, the official looked through the window and found him hanging from the ceiling of the room.
The police official immediately informed the IIC of the police station Kalyanmai Sendha. Later, the IIC accompanied by the SP went to the spot to know the details. The police brought down the constable’s body and sent it for post-mortem.
The SP said he has directed G Udaygiri SDPO D Tirupati Rao Patnaik to take up the investigation of the case. The cause of Gjotal’s suicide would be known after the investigation, he added.
On being informed about Ghotal’s death, his wife accompanied by a relative reached Tikabali police station. The deceased constable’s family comprising wife and two children are staying at Dakapala in Phulbani town.
It may be noted that Swagatika Behera, the sub-inspector of G Udaygiri police station in the district had committed suicide by hanging herself in her official residence on August 27 last year. The cause of her suicide is yet to be ascertained.
