Islamabad: The last time Imran Khan was arrested, from the High Court premises two-and-a-half months ago, all hell broke loose as supporters of his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged violent demonstrations across Pakistan.
Will the former Pakistan Prime Minister be arrested again?
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday issued a non-bailable warrant against Imran.
Unlike the May 9 arrest, which was in connection with charges of corruption, the latest warrant relates to a contempt case.
ECP directed the Islamabad Police to arrest and present Pakistan’s World Cup-winning cricket captain before it on Tuesday, Dawn reported.
Imran, former Information minister Fawad Chaudhry and others were booked for allegedly using ‘intemperate’ language against the chief election commissioner and ECP.
The warrant says that Imran repeatedly refused to appear before the poll panel despite being served notices and issued bailable warrants on January 16 and March 2.
Now, ECP has directed Islamabad’s Inspector General to arrest Imran and produce him before it at 10 am on July 25.
ECP initiated contempt proceedings against the ex-PM and two former party leaders last year.
Imran is facing numerous legal cases in various courts since he was ousted from power in April last year.
