Sambalpur: A contractual worker of Sambalpur University reportedly attempted self-immolation in the campus on Tuesday.
According to sources, while the university’s academic council meeting was going on, the worker, identified as Dinabandhu Mishra, poured kerosene on himself and set fire. The university employees present at the spot rushed to him and doused the fire with extinguishers.
Later, they admitted Dinabandhu in Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) at Burla. The condition of Dinabandhu, who sustained serious burn injuries, was stated to be critical.
The cause of Dinabandhu’s extreme step has not been ascertained but the sources said he was upset by the behaviour of the vice-chancellor of the university towards him.
