Chennai: The tradition of politicians and ministers shooting their mouth off to spark a controversy continues unabated.

In the latest case, Tamil Nadu’s Health minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday blamed north Indian students for a surge in COVID-19 cases in the state.

“North Indian students are spreading COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu. Students from Kelambakkam VIT College and Sathyasai College have been affected by the coronavirus infection in hostels and classes,” ANI quoted Subramanian as saying.

He qualified his statement by saying that in some north Indian states, COVID-19 cases are increasing.

Opposition leaders took to Twitter to condemn Subramanian’s comment and demanded an apology.

BJP’s Jitin Prasada described the remark as “extremely irresponsible, derogatory and insulting to North Indians.”

Tamil Nadu reported 98 fresh COVID-positive cases, but no there was no fatality.

India saw a slight rise in coronavirus infections today – 2,745 new cases, up 407 from previous 24 hours — after a dip over the last few days.
