Bhubaneswar: A convict in drugs smuggling case escaped from police custody on the premises of a court in Odisha capital on Saturday.
According to sources, police had arrested Bijay Kumar Mania under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. On Saturday, they took him to the court of additional district judge III in Bhubaneswar for hearing of the case.
The court convicted Bijay after hearing the case and sentenced him to 10-year imprisonment. After the announcement of the court’s verdict, Bijay came out with police escort to be taken in police van to jail. But he managed to give a slip to the police and escaped from the court premises.
Following this, personnel of Commissionerate Police in plain clothes and Reserve Police rushed to the court and launched a search operation in the area. But they failed to trace Bijay.
This is for second consecutive day that an accused has escaped from police custody in Bhubaneswar. On Friday night, an accused had managed to give slip to personnel of Nayapalli police station while he was being taken to be produced in court.
