Valsad: A police inspector faces an inquiry for arresting a newlywed couple and seven family members for allegedly breaching night curfew restrictions.
The incident took place in Gujarat’s Valsad where the marriage party was returning home after the wedding ceremony.
The couple and their relatives were released on bail an hour later, but Surat Range IG Rajkumar Pandian ordered an investigation against Inspector VH Jadeja who nabbed the marriage party, The Indian Express reported.
Inspector Jadeja, who was on night patrol on Tuesday night, stopped three vehicles around 12.30 am and took the couple and others to Valsad police station and charged them under IPC sections 188 (disobeying a police order) and 269 (disobeying a court order, indulging in a negligent act which may spread the infection).
Among those arrested were councillor and former president of Valsad municipality Rajesh Patel, his wife Meera Patel and Valsad municipality councillor Vikash Patel.
Rajesh Patel wrote to Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Surat IG Pandian, urging them to take action against the police officers for their “inhuman behaviour.”
He explained that wedding date was fixed well before night curfew was announced.
“We asked the cops to let the couple go home, but they refused,” he said.
The state government has imposed a 10 pm to 6 am night curfew in 10 cities amid a massive rise in daily COVID infections.
