Bhubaneswar: A police constable, who was critically injured in a road accident on NH-16 near Vani Vihar Square in the city on Friday afternoon, succumbed to his injuries at a government hospital.
According to sources, Asit Kumar Mishra (55), a constable of Ulunda police station in Sonepur district, was on the way to Bhubaneswar to submit the body samples of a deceased for viscera test at the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) at Rasulgarh when a speeding jeep hit his bike from behind and overturned near a flyover at Satsang Vihar near Vani Vihar Square.
As a result, Mishra fell off his bike and crashed into the iron barricade on the side of the road. He was rushed to a community health centre at Saheed Nagar where the doctors pronounced him as brought dead.
The incident took place around 1 pm.
On being informed, police rushed to the spot and brought driver Sangram Singh out of his vehicle. However, three of his associates managed to escape.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver and his associates were under the influence of liquor while the owner of the vehicle belongs to Bharatpur area, on the outskirts of the city.
