Corona Patient Has Specific Coughing Sound, Says Odisha RMRC Director

Bhubaneswar: The coughing sound can tell whether a person is afflicted with COVID-19, said the director of Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Dr Sanghamitra Pati on Thursday.

“There are different coughing sounds for different ailments. As COVID-19 irritates the lung tissue, the cough is dry and persistent which is accompanied by shortness of breath and muscle pain. As the disease progresses, the lung tissue is filled with fluid and the patient may take even shorter breath as the body struggles to get enough oxygen,” Pati said at a press meet here.

Stating that a joint research is underway by the Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI) and RMRC on various coughing sounds, she said the NIPI has developed an app through which the coughing sound will be recorded and later analyzed through artificial intelligence to ascertain whether the person has COVID-19.

Referring to the rise in COVID-19 positive cases in Bhubaneswar, the RMRC director said that the level of the virus in the city will be known after the second-phase of serology survey.

“The serology survey, which is underway in Puri district, will begin in Ganjam district from the first week of August,” she added.
