Sonepur: In a major breakthrough, police have busted a racket dealing with illegal cough syrup and arrested five people in Odisha’s Sonepur district on Friday.
A special police team apprehended the accused persons and seized 1920 bottles of cough syrup from them during a crackdown in Tarava area of the district, Sonepur Superintendent of Police Amaresh Panda told reporters.
The accused were caught when two of them who had procured the cough syrup bottles from Bhubaneswar in 12 cartons were about to hand over the consignment to two others from Balangir district and another from Sonepur.
The arrested youths were identified as Prashant Naik of Begunia in Puri district, Sushant Sethi of Komanda village in Nayagarh district, Sushant Dang & Debasish Chhatriya of Balangir and Devendra Patra of Tarva area of Subarnapur district.
Two 4-wheelers, 5 mobile phones and 1920 bottles of cough syrup have been seized from them, the SP said. Further investigation is in progress.
The fresh achievement comes two days after police arrested five people and seized 1120 bottles of cough syrup in neighbouring Balangir district on Wednesday.
