Bhubaneswar: The special crime unit of city police have arrested a couple for allegedly duping at least 16 investors of over Rs 12 crore by promising higher returns on gold trading.
Ramesh Chandra Majhi and his wife Anisha Subudhi were arrested near Biju Patnaik College on Wednesday on the basis of a complaint lodged by Bholanath Mohanty, a businessman, whom the couple had allegedly duped of Rs 5.6 crore between 2022 and 2023.
One Bapun Behera had introduced Mohanty to Majhi and his wife, who initially resided in Nayapalli, in 2022. Majhi had reportedly shown a fake RBI authorisation letter to him, claiming that he was a genuine gold trader. Subudhi had also signed on the agreement papers executed between her husband and Mohanty. Subsequently, the couple vacated their Nayapalli residence and could not be traced, police sources said.
Investigation revealed that the accused operated a well-planned scheme and defrauded 15 other investors of approximately Rs 7 crore. Ten among them had met with the commissioner of police, seeking justice.
A Mercedes Benz car was seized from Majhi.
Police said that steps are being taken to recover money invested by the victims.
